PPCW’s new Regional Service Center was completed on time and under budget! We’ve begun the move-in process, and are already enjoying this beautiful new facility. We look forward to celebrating the Grand Opening with all of our supporters soon.

The Let’s Build campaign has now raised more than $10 million; we have about $2 million to go. Construction of the new Regional Service Center continues on-time and under-budget. In fact, we are now so close to opening that we were able to hold our first event at the center this past weekend on October 25, 2009. Members of the Margaret Sanger Society gathered to take a tour of the building and learn about one of the education programs we hope to grow through the new space: SiHLE, (Sisters Informing, Healing, Living, and Empowering). This culturally appropriate program developed for African-American teen girls works to create a nurturing environment in which girls support each other as they discuss ways to develop healthy relationships and protect themselves from STDs. We look forward to growing this successful program in the years ahead. Thanks to all Margaret Sanger Society members who attended last weekend’s event!

Thanks to Saskia de Boer, Saga Shoffner, Michelle Jackson, Lisa MacKenzie, Ann Witsil, and Cara Denver for co-hosting two house parties in September. And thank you to everyone who spent their evening with us and made a generous donation to our Regional Service Center project. We enjoyed beautiful weather, delicious food, and fantastic company!

Thanks to Jenny & Carter MacNichol, Chris & David Vernier, and Marilyn Epstein for hosting wonderful house parties this summer! Guests came to learn about how they could support the Regional Service Center campaign, and to talk with board members and staff about Planned Parenthood’s work and goals. They also heard directly from Teen Council members about the kinds of questions and challenges they address with their peers through this important program, which we plan to grow when we move to our new space. More house parties are planned for this fall. If you’d like to host one, please contact Liz Reilly, Major Gifts & Capital Campaign Director, at 503.280.6150 ext. 2151 or liz.reilly@ppcw.org.

Thanks to you, Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette’s dream of a regional service center is fast becoming a reality. The steel’s up, the concrete’s poured, and the brick’s being laid! Construction is on-time and under-budget. We’re also pleased to announce we’ve officially secured $1.6 million in new market tax credits. As of july 2009, more than 800 donors have made gifts bringing us three-quarters of the way to our goal.

$9.5 Million Pledged Toward New Planned Parenthood Regional Service Center Planned Parenthood has raised more than 75 percent of the $12.5 million needed for the project
Grants from Spirit Mountain Community Fund and The Oregon Community Foundation bring PPCW’s Regional Service Center project fundraising total to $9.5 million. Spirit Mountain Community Fund generously pledged $50,000 toward the expansion project, and The Oregon Community Foundation awarded PPCW with a $75,000 grant toward the new facility. These two recent pledges put PPCW more than 75 percent of the way toward the final campaign goal of $12.5 million.
The Spirit Mountain Community Fund's focus is to improve the quality of life in Northwest Oregon through community investments that provide lasting benefits consistent with the Tribe's culture and values. Spirit Mountain Community Fund donates about $5 million each year to local programs and services that benefit citizens striving for self-sufficiency. Since it was established in 1997, the Fund has targeted special needs in public safety, health, education, culture, environment, problem gaming and historic preservation. To date the Spirit Mountain Community Fund has given over $45 million to Oregon non-profits.
“Our trustees and Tribal Council have a firm commitment to health. Providing reproductive health care helps pave the way for good decisions and healthy families. Planned Parenthood is an excellent community resource to help women make these healthy choices,” said Director Shelley Hanson.
The mission of The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) is to improve life in Oregon and promote effective philanthropy. OCF works with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create funds to support the community causes they care about. Through these funds, OCF awards more than $55 million annually in grants and scholarships.

The Kresge Foundation announced the pledge of a $750,000 challenge grant toward PPCW’s capital campaign to build its new Regional Service Center. The Kresge Foundation is a national, private foundation that seeks to influence the quality of life for future generations by creating access and opportunity in underserved communities, including improving the health of low-income people. With the Kresge Foundation pledge, PPCW has raised more than $9.4 million toward its $12.5 million capital campaign goal. The Kresge Foundation grant comes just as PPCW celebrates the groundbreaking of the project this week.
“We applaud PPCW’s continued efforts at expanding reproductive health services to your region’s vulnerable residents,” said Rip Rapson, President and CEO of the Kresge Foundation. “The new facility clearly responds to significant community needs.”
Much of the Kresge Foundation’s work focuses on health, education, human services and community development. Their Health Program seeks to influence and assist communities in the creation of healthy living environments for disadvantaged populations. In 2007, the foundation awarded 283 grants totaling $178.5 million.

Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking of the new Regional Service Center in Portland. The Regional Service Center, located at NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and Beech Street, will soon be home to all of PPCW’s administrative staff and a new, state-of-the-art health center. Developer Beech Street Partners is preparing to begin construction on the project, expecting to complete the building by late 2009. In addition to housing PPCW’s regional hub, the new building will provide 5,000 square feet of retail space and bring as many as 140 jobs to the neighborhood.
“Our current NE Portland health center has been operating at full capacity seven days a week but still can’t meet the demand for health care services in this area,” said Kathleen Altman, PPCW Vice President of Clinical Services. “By relocating our health center to our new building on MLK, we’ll be able to expand our preventative services and serve thousands more patients in this community each year.”
PPCW saw 60,000 patients at its eleven health centers last year. The majority of PPCW’s patients are low-income, uninsured or underinsured, and rely on providers like Planned Parenthood for basic sexual and reproductive health care.
“There are still more than 70,000 teens and low-income women in Oregon and Southwest Washington that need access to affordable family planning care,” said David Greenberg, PPCW President and CEO. “This building will enable PPCW to continue expanding our services and reach some of these people in need, providing them with essential health care.”
PPCW is proud that its new building will contribute to PDC’s urban renewal efforts to revitalize Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
“The Portland Development Commission is pleased that Beech Street Properties will be developing such an exciting project on this long-empty lot,” said Joanne Mortensen, PDC Project Coordinator.
“This new building will be extremely energy efficient and is slated for LEED-Gold certification. We’re making every effort to use local materials, reduce waste, and recycle everything possible during construction,” said Carrington Barrs, Senior Project Manager at B&G Builders, the company constructing the new property. “We’re thrilled to be working with such an exceptional construction team and to be able to bring another high-performance, environmentally-friendly and healthy building to Portland.”
